Far too long

Wow I can’t believe how long it’s been since I’ve written in this journal! Many design eras have come to pass, including ditching my own favourite font Helvetica and beginning a new affair with Myriad, new branding projects with The Waimakariri District Council, major website update for Summers Bed & Breakfast (check our the javascript for it!) and an excitable offer to teach animation and webdesign to the design school of where I graduated! A few months back I had been observing design agencies and their offers of employment (after succeeding to make it to the interview rounds!), but was unsatisfied with each one.

The emptiness I felt wasn’t because I didn’t want to work in a design agency, and not that my variety of work didn’t suit the agency (apparently my designs are didn’t share a consistent “style”), but I wanted more than mere composition of type and image when I am designing. I want to be in an environment where design is open and honest, where I feel I am appreciated to share my full potential without the impudent attitude I felt at the interviews. I desire flexibility and variety – my choice of work needs to allow me to learn at different levels that continue to grow my confidence as a designer. Hence why I stick at my current job – I’m inhouse designer doing anything from corporate marketing material to advertising campaigns for clients. The only difference is that I asked for part time hours – so that I can experience the new challenge of teaching, growing my freelance business skills, but still have a secure and regular attachment to company that I am loyal and appreciated by. Yeah, I feel my career is nicely balanced!...

Oh by the way, SevenZest website WILL be updated, sooner rather than later me hopes. I have a brand-spanking new logo and the website made to match. So watch this space!
